ABOUT US
FRANCIS CARYN SHANNON
We are Team10, a group of 3 NUS students from Computer Science and Computer Engineering majors who are all set out to improve the lives of the elderly! We first embarked on this project to build Handroid in December 2017 after joining the Robots@NUS competition. We all came together with the common cause to help out the seniors in Singapore as we found the competition a very meaningful one. We came up with the Handroid as we believe that it can help the weakening elderly with tasks that they are too weak to perform. We want them to realise that they are still as capable as they used to be.
OUR MOTIVATIONS
We were first motivated by the thought that the elderly, having grown more frail, might become too weak to carry a cooking wok. Hence the simple act of cooking for themselves or their loved ones would become physically straining for them. We initially wanted to create a wok which can move around on its own, mimicking the hand actions of the user, but we felt that that would only benefit a select number of elderly. So we came up with Handroid, which can do not only cooking, but other physically straining stuff for the elderly.
Pretty handy, we would say. ;)
"Caring for our seniors is perhaps the greatest responsibility we have. Those who walked before us have given so much and made possible the life we all enjoy."
- John Hoeven

OUR product
The Handroid is a robotic arm that mimics that of a human's. It aims to aid elderly in their daily tasks and can be controlled wirelessly by a remote control which translates the elderly's actions into instructions for the robotic arm's movement. Our users are then able to use our robotic arm to perform tasks that are too physically tedious for them, such as tasks that involve carrying heavy objects.
For this prototype, we made use of the LEGO Mindstorms to build our robot (as per competition requirements). Being used to writing actual code, we dropped the idea of using EV3 coding blocks, and instead installed EV3dev to code our project in Python.
